Workshop Description
“Gua” means to scrape and “Sha” refers to the raised rash (petechiae) that results from the scraping. Put together they can be translated to mean, “to scrape away fever or disease.” The practitioner uses a scraping motion on the muscle with a special Gua Sha tool. This action creates friction which causes blood to escape from the capillaries causing the appearance of petechiae on the surface of the skin. Gua Sha is applied to areas of muscular pain and tension to help move blood stagnation and decrease muscular tension and balance out the affected area.

Read testimonials from our past students about Gua Sha:
Gua Sha has made me substantially more aware of where traumatized tissue resides in general on peoples’ bodies and has made it very easy to find particular critical areas of trauma. It is also the tool that has taken my work to the “next level”, encouraging tissues to let go after my other modalities (Orthopedic Massage, Myofascial Release Massage, Cranio-sacral work, Cross-fiber Friction, Trigger Point) have gotten me as far as they can. The result is efficient sessions, more quickly and completely satisfied clients and less strain on my body. Even my clients who do not wish to receive Gua Sha (and therefore do not receive it) have benefited from what the modality has taught me. It was a quick, cost-effective addition to my tool kit . . . . and, dare I say, my now daily Gua Sha facials have taken a few years off of my face! – Holly Heyser, BS, LMT – Heyser Therapy, LLC – Wayne, PA
I incorporated gua sha into my existing massage treatment and it changed everything for better! I have been a very successful massage therapist for thirty years. I had no idea that such a simple treatment existed! The tools do what my fingers can not. I have achieved such remarkable results with my clients. They now ask to be scraped…..The results from the combination of my massage and gua sha scraping lasts longer than from just deep tissue massage and I can reach deeper and find problem areas that I could never before even feel. So now I can find all kinds of old scars, deep spasms, tissue “constipation”…..and treat all the issues. Gua sha also makes massage more effective and easier. Just a few scrapes over tight muscle relaxes the underlying tissues immediately and shortens the massage time and makes it much more effective. Plus people always feel so much relief and affect from the treatment that they now pay me much more without me asking for it….My massage practice increased not only in volume but in income as well. Now I can not do massage treatment without Gua Sha…there is no point! – Eva Smith, LMT
