In this course we will dive into the mechanics of stretching and discuss the efficacy of a complex form of stretching termed proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) stretching. This is a form of stretching that is more aggressive and rewarding compared to any other form of stretching. It is capable of achieving immediate and rapid increases in range of motion (ROM). PNF stretching uses the body’s own defensive mechanisms set in place by the nervous system and mechanoreceptors to enhance the effectiveness of the stretch. This is accomplished by alternating stretches with contractions of the muscle being stretched. After taking this course, you will be able to incorporate specific targeted stretches into your routine to help your clients address some of the common postural deficits we see every day. In each section you will find text as well as a PowerPoint voiceover. You may review both if you wish; however, reviewing either one alone should be enough for you to get the answers to the quiz questions. You do not have to read all the text and watch the PowerPoint voiceovers unless you really want to!

Course Objectives:

  1. Students will understand and be able to explain the importance of stretching to their clients.
  2. Students will understand and be able to explain the importance of a proper warm up prior to a stretching routine.
  3. Students will be able to identify where their clients are lacking in their ROM.
  4. Students will be able to evaluate their clients and determine what stretches they would benefit from in order to improve their function and posture.
  5. Students will be able to identify the most common postural deviations and how to correct them through targeted stretches.
  6. We will review the important anatomy.
  7. Students will become proficient in the stretching techniques learned in the course.
  8. Students will be able to determine what stretches are the most important ones for their specific client and which ones can be skipped.
  9. Students will be able to explain the science and theory behind PNF stretching to their clients.
